Blue Plaques

Cirencester Civic Society has three aims: to promote, protect and help shape our wonderful town of Cirencester. One of the ways in which we meet these aims is by awarding a range of plaques which exemplify civic pride.

We began installing plaques as a Millennium project in 1999 and we now have a map for everyone to enjoy which can be found below. Most of the plaques are blue and give a brief description of the historical importance of the building and/or the people who were connected to it; purple plaques mark significant sites from Roman Corinium.

The Trustees of Cirencester Civic Society, supported by Advisors, meet regularly to assess nominations received from the public for plaques. As Trustees of a registered charity, we are mindful of the need to balance public interest with best use of community funds; each plaque costs in the region of £500, depending on the level of detail in the text.

The Committee examines each nomination against the following criteria:

  • How does the nomination help to promote, protect or shape the town?
  • Is the proposed site within the parish boundary and in open view of passers-by?
  • Why is the building of historical importance?
  • Why is the person of national or local significance?
  • Has permission to erect an award been given by the owner of the property or land and any other interested parties?
  • Can the nominee contribute to the costs of the design, production and erection of the plaque?

If you would like to nominate a building or person of historical importance please tell us how your suggestion meets the above criteria and email your nomination to: secretary@cirencestercivicsociety.org.uk
